Dr. Snider and Dr. Marr know more than anyone how dangerous a missing tooth or teeth can be for patients’ overall, long- term health. Many patients take teeth for granted and here at Lake Country Dental, we understand how easy it is to do; however, we also know the illnesses and disease that can form from dental and oral neglect.
When patients have lost a tooth or teeth, they tend to avoid using that portion of their mouth to bite and chew their food due to discomfort or pain. Over time the tissue in this area will weaken and dissipate from the lack of exercise and use of the particular tissue. Weak gum tissue will most likely lead to gum disease, known as periodontitis, if continually neglected. When the gums become infected they start to bleed and recede from the teeth, creating dangerous pockets of decay and bacteria on the patient’s tooth roots. Infection in the mouth can result in inflammation of the blood vessels which can travel to the heart and the brain; gum disease has been directly linked to heart disease and brain damage.
When the vessels in the heart become constricted and need to work harder to pump blood oxygen to and from the body, the patient can easily develop high blood pressure. Patients that experience high blood pressure have a much higher chance of suffering from heart disease or heart attacks if they do not consult their doctor immediately. Even the built up plaque over time in the teeth can break off and travel to the heart causing heart attacks and deadly blockage. It is more than imperative for patients to regulate and maintain good oral health to maximize their life- span and their cardiac health.
Just as the heart can be more than negatively affected by the inflammation of gum disease, the brain can also fall victim to this. When the infection travels to the brain tissue it can cause it to become swollen, which we refer to as an edema, and cause major damage to the patient’s brain. Severe brain damage if not addressed can lead to deadly strokes and even possibly Alzheimer’s disease. Periondontitis is the one of the most harmful diseases for our overall health that is significantly underestimated and must be addressed immediately for patients that experience bleed gums, recession or inflammation of the mouth.
Choosing Dental Implants
Dental implants have the ability to prevent patients from developing gum disease and work toward a better dental and oral health over time. Through a natural and biocompatible process, dental implants are accepted by the oral system as a real and functioning piece just as our original teeth are. Dental implants can provide a comfortable bite and chew for patients that have suffered a missing tooth or teeth for years and can even work to increase density in the bones of the teeth and jaw. This solution provides healthy teeth and smiles but also confidence for patients that lost their love for smiling years ago.
