Dental implants are the most reliable teeth replacement system available for patients with missing teeth. The construction and application of dental implants create a durable and executed system that will combine with your oral anatomy and last a lifetime if taken care of properly. Drs. Snider and Marr would like to explain the behind the scenes action of dental implants and how they are created specifically for your oral anatomy.
How It All Works
Prior to your procedure, a 3D CT scan will be used to virtually plan implant placement and the design of your replacement teeth. Once you go in for the procedure, you will be put under local anesthesia and teeth may be extracted if need be. Special drills are then used in increments, each widening the insertion area for the final dental implant. Once the area is prepped, a specialized drill will gently screw the dental implant into the bone of your jaw. Once the implant is secure, the top is placed and temporary teeth are given for the duration of the healing process, which can take up to several months.
On a more traditional approach, implants are left undisturbed to heal and then in the remolding stage, the bone will grow and the tissue will form around the implant to create a natural bond. This occurrence is refereed to as osseointegration and it is the key in making dental implants successful in providing patients with long lasting, durable, and effective replacement teeth. An all-on-4 procedure applies to patients who has all their teeth missing and doesn’t want to continue going through the hassles of dentures. Their dental implants are supported by a bridge and when implemented initially, will only last for up to six months. After the six months has expired, the bone in the jaw would have healed and then permanent fixed teeth or a permanent supported bridge would then be applied.
Fabrication of Replacement Teeth
Dental implant crowns are what gives patients oral exterior its resilience and beauty. They are designed to look and feel like real teeth, allowing patients to regain old eating habits and self confidence in their appearance. Crowns are designed according to the shape of your mouth and to your desired specifications that you and your doctor have discussed. They are intended to mimic your original tooth surface to prevent discomfort. Each crown is designed custom made for you. Impressions are then taken of your new teeth and abutments. These impressions or plaster molds are made from water and gypsum powder, a technique used since the 1770’s. These impression will record the shape and placement of your crowns, allowing the doctor to make sure that they will fit perfectly in your mouth.
