Dr. Snider is here blogging today from Fort Worth, TX to explain the harmful effects gum disease can have on the jaw bone; dental implants are the best solution for someone with missing teeth after getting a bone graft. Did you know that neglect of the teeth and gums can actually deteriorate your jaw bone? That is a pretty scary thought, huh?
Some people have treated their teeth so badly that they lose them and still continue to chew and bite without them. Not only can this damage cause facial deformation, but it can also lead to early wrinkles and actual sunken parts of the face. Normally chewing and speaking are supposed to be considered good exercise for the jaw, but doing this without teeth can be very harmful to the oral health and already existing jaw bone damage.
Periodontal disease, or gum disease, can also lead to the destruction of the alveolar bone; the top layer of the jaw bone. Once the gums are infected by the nasty and harmful bacteria in the mouth, the plaque starts to make the gums bleed and eventually they will recede from the teeth. When space between the teeth and gums forms, the bacteria and plaque will build in the actual gums; this will eventually start to erode the alveolar bone.
Once the bone in the jaw starts to deteriorate, it makes it much easier for the rest of the oral health to go down with it. Chances are if you are suffering from jaw bone loss, you have not taken good or decent care of your teeth and gums. It is imperative that we brush and floss to extract this disgusting plaque from the mouth; to avoid diseases such as this.
In order to have the dental implant procedure done successfully, you need to have a sufficient amount of bone in the jaw. The process of osseointegration, when the titanium is embedded in the jaw bone will not work without a strong jaw bone structure.
Your gum tissue can be considered a pretty strong part of the body, but where corrosion has occurred and the gums are worn down, the jaw bone will suffer. Damage of the jaw bone can even lead to distortion of the mouth and face, and you will not be able to get dental implants without a bone grafting procedure.
The bone graft is basically a bone tissue transplant procedure, that repair osseous fractures by replacing the worn down bone with healthy bone tissue. Depending on the amount and size of the fracture damage, the recovery process could take up to 3-5 months.
As we stated earlier, you must have this procedure done if you are looking to get dental implants. If you have a missing tooth or teeth, the best solution would be dental implants. These harmful and susceptible spaces in the mouth will only contribute to further damage in the remaining teeth, gums and jaw bone. Even just cleaning out the mouth constantly will not help with this, you must plant teeth in the spaces to protect your mouth from further decay and deterioration.
Our simple procedure for dental implants take about 4-6 months to complete and is more than worth it. Having teeth in these lost spaces, could be the difference between life and death for you. Periodontal disease is well known to be linked to heart disease, brain damage and even Alzheimer’s.
